We are all looking for new and effective ways to get the most out of our SEO Rank Monitor account. For me personally, tagging is the most important feature. Let me explain to you why.

Obviously it is important to select the right keywords and competitors to analyze them with SEO Rank Monitor. However, in order to truly use the tool to practice SEO in the right way, you’ll need to know how to use tagging to your advantage. With tags you can bundle keywords into groups and monitor their progress in your dashboard. The dashboard simply shows you how your current situation looks like.

But what you really want is setting goals like ‘I want to improve specific rankings’ or ‘I want to increase the relevant traffic’. Using tags in SEO Rank Monitor will help you achieve these goals. Following, I shall give four specific examples which will give you nice insights in order to start using tags for your keywords in the right way and show you what can be achieved by using them.

1. High traffic keywords

You want to be able to correctly monitor the keywords that are responsible for a lot of traffic. Mostly, those are the keywords that have a high search volume and good rankings. You can bundle the keywords with a tag, for example ‘prio 1’ and by selecting this tag on your dashboard you can monitor what is happening with this keyword.

In addition to those high value keywords, there will always be a second tier: the keywords that can potentially generate a lot of traffic. Those are the keywords with a high search volume, but which do not rank as high as your prio 1 words (their rankings fluctuate between the 4th and 10th position). You do not want to lose sight of these keywords, so it is wise to also organize them with a tag, for example ‘prio 2’. This way you can give all the keywords their own priority based on ranking and search volume.

2. Cash cow keywords

Beside the keywords that generate traffic, there are also a lot of keywords which enable conversions. You want to monitor those keywords as well, but in order to prevent confusion you cannot use the same type of tag you already used for the high traffic keywords.

To gain a better overview of all the keywords you can organize them based on their importance, meaning: the number of conversions they produce. Monitoring these keywords is very important. A small change in rankings regarding these important keywords can lead to a big loss in turnover. So, when faced with a fall, you immediately want to take action.

For example, for iPhoned.nl we have recently tagged all variations of the keyword iPhone 6 abonnement (iPhone 6 plan) with ‘cash1’ because we saw a movement in the conversions from the iPhone 6S to iPhone 6 plans, which made us changed our priorities.

3. The effect of website changes

Using tags does not only show you how your most important keywords are doing, but also displays the effect of changes made to your website. For example, you have just adapted the main menu and added some important keywords with links to the pages that are ranking on those keywords. Now, you want to know if these adjustments had any effect. Give the keywords you have used a specific tag and monitor the rankings to see if it had a positive effect.

4. Link building activities

Finally, it is also important to tag the keywords you use for link building activities. It can take a while before your work will show effects on your rankings. By tagging them you will not lose sight of those keywords and you can measure witch activities have the biggest impact on achieving better rankings.

Interesting insights

Recently we have experienced what the effect of these four ways of tagging can achieve. We introduced a new sim only compare tool and tagged all keywords as explained above. This led to some pretty interesting insights, which we can now use to improve our rankings and earnings. So, I would like to encourage you to get started with a good tag plan and find out how you can use SEO Rank Monitor to improve your own rankings.

One last tip: use the Scheduled Reports functionality, and makes sure that the most important dashboards appear in your inbox daily. This way you do not miss out on important changes within your rankings.
